Suggestion Box…

18 Oct

I realize that up to this point I’ve been only talking up all the benefits of Davis Square, but like all things in life (and all bloggers) we often have some suggestions.  So I’ve offered a few of my own suggestions to improve the area.

One minor suggestion that I came up with tonight actually while getting ready to make dinner was the lack of a Grocery store.  The only, probably most extended store in the area is Mckinnon’s Market.  I guess that most would be happy with the one store but the addition of another convenient grocer in the area would be nice to see.  Without a car, the closest big grocery store would be in Porter Square (one stop away) off the train.

Another suggestion for the square. Don’t close everything down so early!  Everything is great around the square up until everything closes which to me seems to come awfully early.  Places to eat around here seem to all be shut down by midnight in the square.  Coming home from the bar on a Friday or Saturday night and looking for a quick bite to eat is almost impossible.  I understand that having the party end early makes it more neighborhood friendly but a handful of options for a late night meal couldn’t be that harmful to our pretty tame square.

For now that’s all I have, but I am extremely interested in see what others out there have to say about improving our dear Davis Square.  So please comment any suggestions that you too may have!

Prime Location

18 Oct

As I mentioned before I’m a pretty recent resident of Davis Square which is that reason for why I have chosen to create a blog on Davis Square.  What I haven’t covered already was the reason in which I have chosen to live in Davis before knowing all these great benefits to the area.  The biggest reason I have chosen Davis out of the all the apartments in my search for a new home is because of location.  The convenience of having the red line train in a 5 minute walking distance from my apartment sealed that deal for me!

Not only is it nice being so close to jump on and off the train to get downtown but it’s to live so accessible to downtown without actually living downtown.  In my opinion, the red line is the best line so that also attracted me to the Davis Square.  A quick 20 minute ride from the Davis stop inbound and you can find ourself at Park Street stop.

You have the convenience of getting into the city of Boston without the inconvenience of actually residing in the downtown area.  Along with that and cost of living I had to go with the obvious choice of chosing Davis Square.  Here, I have all the excitement right down the street from me that I could have living in the North End or Beacon Hill but for almost half the price.  As a grad student, nothing beats having a cheaper rent while still gaining most of the advantages of enjoying the city of Boston.

I hope now you have a true understanding of my decision in location and that in the blog somewhere I can persuade you if not live here but at least drop by to visit.

Funday Fall Day

18 Oct

What a beautiful weekend in Davis Square!  The leaves are changing, people are walking and musicians are even still out there playing. After such a cold Friday night it was nice to have the sun out and still be able to enjoy some outdoor fun before the big bad winter comes.  With places such as Davis Squared, Buffalo Exchange, Goodwill, Suneri Boutique, Black and Blues, Boston Shaker and many other little shops, there’s always somewhere to check out while strolling the square.

And at the end of a long day there’s always a nice cozy place to sip on some coffee or tea (or get some ice cream).

Johnny D’s is the Place to be!

15 Oct

If you’re coming to visit Davis Square make sure to stop in at Johnny D’s Restaurant and Entertainment.  This restaurant has great food and late night menus but is known for their nightly live bands and live jazz brunch on the weekends.  Bringing in only the best musicians Johnny D’s has taste in who’s playing.  They’re located right off the right line T stop in Davis Square on Holland Street.  Always presented with a crowd with music coming from the windows the place is hard to miss.

Another reason why this place impresses me is thier service to customers. With such a relaxed, laid back atmosphere and great wait staff I place Johnny D’s highly on my places to check out in Davis.  So be sure to add this spot to your “Davis To Do” Lists!

Food, food and MORE FOOD!

13 Oct

So what’s the big deal with Davis Square anyways?

Well my favorite thing that the square has to offer is the numerous choices in places to eat. From pizza, burgers, italian, mexican, barbecue, etc., Davis offers a variety of places to either sit down for an enjoyable meal or grab to go.

The newest establishment to the area is Foundry on Elm. It offers countless beers on tap, delicious food (in my opinion) and a clean, modern atmosphere.  But don’t just stop there because when it comes to food and drink you’ll regret not trying a bite from everywhere in the Square!

To read more about what Davis brings to the table in terms of food and drink I found this article from the Boston Globe very helpful as well as interesting! Check it out at Boston.com.

Bon Appetit!

An Old-Fashioned Theatre

13 Oct

Right in the heart of Davis Square is the Somerville Theatre.  Now if this were some regular movie theatre I wouldn’t be blogging it up and wasting your time over a “movie theatre.”  But it’s not!  The Somerville Theatre brings this old-fashioned movie time feel that’s rare to see today.  With golden cord, red drapes outlining the screen, and balconies (that you can actually sit on), this theatre isn’t the typical, modern setting that we’re all used to.  This unique theatre not only offers the hottest movies on four big screens but it also offers beer and wine to it’s 21 and older crowd.  My only complaint about the place is that because it is set up like an older theatre there’s no leg room and the seats aren’t the reclining lounge chairs seen in the bigger showcase theatres. Although this won’t stop me from stopping by again (heck, it’s too close not to).

So for $8 a ticket (usually at least $10 at other theatres) why not check a flick out today!
